One of the biggest mistakes people make is not getting their free yearly copy of their credit report.  Not know what is on your credit report is very dangerous.  The old saying that "knowing is half the battle" is true.

There are a few places that you can get your credit report.  The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has made it possible to receive a free yearly credit report from each of the major credit bureaus.  The best place to get your free yearly credit report is www.annualcreditreport.com.  The free yearly credit report provided by this site does not give your credit score.  When you get to the three credit bureaus ( Transunion, Equifax, Experian) pages they allow you to purchase a copy of the credit report from them.

At www.annualcreditreport.com you can download your free yearly credit report to your computer or you can download the form and mail in your information to receive the credit report in the mail.  Once you receive your yearly credit go over it to make sure the information is correct.

Some services offer a free yearly credit report when you subscribe to one of their services.  You do have to use a service to monitor your credit report.  If you decide to use one of these services cancel during the trial period to avoid monthly fees.
