I came across this article about people who had found extreme ways to pinch pennies.
The article features 13 different people who are Extreme Penny Pincher's.
The common denominator that they all share is something in their lives pushed them to find ways to save.
I will give two thumbs up to these extreme penny pincher's for being creative to save money in their every day lives.
Some of these extreme penny pincher's ideas are interesting enough to try.
Other extreme penny pincher's ideas I would stay far away from.
Source CNN Money- Confessions of extreme penny pinchers
1. This extreme penny pincherpicks up vacuums off the curb. He fixes them and then sells them on Craigslist. He makes an extra $400 per year.
If you are a handy person you could try this in your area to make some extra money.
He wants to start picking up furniture.
With bed bugs out breaks across the country I would not try this unless I had a place I could fumigate the furniture.
2. These extreme penny pincher's follow seniors to a local place that has good food, cheap prices and all around wholesome place.
The seniors menu offers a healthier selection and smaller portions.
You can save money and work on your health at the same time.
You don't have to be a senior to try this out.
3. These extreme penny pincher's started a pig farm.
They found raising their on pigs cost them $1.50 per pound instead of $3.50-6.00 per pound.
This is one of the extremes that I would stay away from.
I don't eat very much pork.
I have high blood pressure so I stay away from foods that can elevate my blood pressure.
You could also sell the meat to other families that are looking to save money on food.
4. This extreme penny pincher joins birthday clubs to get free meals.
She saves around $500 a year on these meals.
Some restaurants will allow up to 30 days after your birthday to claim the free meal.
This could be very fun to try.
You can go on-line to check if your favorite restaurants have bierthday clubs you can sign up to start enjoying the savings.
I have done this with Baskin Robbins for a free cone on my birthday or during the week of my birthday.
5. This extreme penny pincher is sleeping at his job.
I don't agree with doing this to save money.
You could get fired for sleeping at the office.
I'm glad he did not tell his name.
After some one reads this article they could start checking out the office at night.
You need your own space.
You can find affordable housing.
6. This extreme penny pincher eats off the $1 menu to save money.
She saves on average $300 per year.
This really works for someone who can not bring their lunch to work.
You can also eat healthier off the dollar menu.
Smaller portions and even salads are available.
7. This extreme penny pincher is a `quasi-Amish'.
He and his wife went through a foreclosure and bankruptcy.
They now live lowered their living expenses from $50,000 to $10,000 per year.
He rides a horse into town.
He also improved his income from $15,000 to $35,000 a year selling eggs.
I would not want to go to this extreme.
I do understand having gone through a foreclosure and bankruptcy not wanting to put themselves back in that situation.
8. These extreme penny pincher's had their children pay for dinner during a vacation.
This was a good way to teach them to save money.
It also thought them to look for deals.
The children were able to learn to share.
They were able to save $50 per night.
Now the children have a idea of what it cost for their parents to feed and entertain this family of seven.
9. This extreme penny pincher drinks as much as he can during happy hour.
He says that he saves $30 per week and $1500 per year drinking during the special drink prices.
I would not do this.
Drinking 4 drinks in a short period of time can leave you intoxicated.
There has to be a better way to save.
You could take advantage of the appetizers that they offer for half off during happy hour.
10. This extreme penny pincher looks for pennies while he walks.
He states that you can find paper money on windy days because money blows out of peoples hands.
He does get good exercise with the 40-50 minute walks each day.
My Bigmoma would find money all the time when she went walking.
So there are treasures out to find when walking.
11. This extreme penny pincher re-roast coffee grinds.
After brewing a batch of coffee he puts the grinds on a cookie sheet and roast them 375 degrees.
Once they are dry he drains the oil and using them again.
This could make your coffee last twice as long.
This may be helpful if you like expensive coffee like "Starbucks".
I'm not a coffee drinker so this would not help me.
I'm going to pass this along to my parents.
12. This extreme penny pincher uses used vegetable oil for fuel.
He wanted to find away to save money on fuel.
He found a group that thought him how to turn vegetable oil into bio-diesel.
He saves $600 to $900 per year.
This really works for someone who likes to experiment.
When I was in college this may have interested me.
I liked being in the chemistry lab.
I wouldn't try it on my own car now.
I would be afraid of damaging the fuel system.
13. This extreme penny pincher stopped eating dinner.
She stated that she needed to lose a few pounds.
Her biggest meal of the day is lunch.
I agree with lunch being the biggest meal.
I think that you need to eat something for dinner other than just drink juice.
You can eat a small salad.
You also need to make sure your last meal is 2 hours before you go to bed.
Now that it is summer there are a lot of fruits and vegetables that you can eat for a light meal.
You may not be an extreme penny pincher.
I will be signing up for the birthday club.
I will also start looking for pennies when I'm out walking or running.
I can put what I find in my piggy bank.
There are ways in your everyday living that you can find ways to save money.
Are you or your family extreme penny pincher's???
